Mountain Nantucket Sleighride
This is not only the correct spelling of Nantucket but also of Sleigh ride, well as far as the Rock group Mountain were concerned when they wrote this brilliant Rock music song back in 1971.
Mountain were and are a Rock Band from the early 70s. Formed in 1969 by original members Leslie West, Felix Pappalardi and N.D.Smart although N D Smart was replaced not long after Mountain played at the Woodstock festival in 1969 by Korky Laing.
In 1970 there first album was released called Mountain Climb. Incidentally they are called Mountain as a reference to band member Leslie West’s size.

The music is in the same lane as that super group Cream. In fact Fleix Papalardi produced Creams album Disraeli Gears.
In 1971 they released the album Nantucket Sleighride. The title comes from the days of whaling.
The sailors would harpoon the whales near the island of Nantucket and naturally the whale would try and swim away dragging the boat that the sailors were in along the sea. With speeds up to 25 mph you can imagine the thrill they got as they rode along the Nantucket Sleigh ride. (Makes the big dipper seem boring in comparison.)
Any way one of these sailors were called Owen Coffin and he was on Nantucket whale ship called Essex which was wrecked by a Sperm Whale. Trying to survive the wreck the other sailors shot poor Owen Coffin and ate him to survive. This story was recorded by Owen Chase who was one of the eight survivors of the Essex
Rock music is at its best when not only are the musicians great , the sound is great and the song they are playing have a great strong melody. This is true with this song. Definitely a driving fast tune for your car ( Watch speed limits).
In the UK the music was used as a signature tune to a weekly political news program on a Sunday.
Play it and your love it within 2 plays. I can see someone like any of the POP bands doing a ballad of this making it a huge hit. Well Ok if that’s what it takes then so be it. A song that should be well known to the masses only if some one would let it be so.
Where are Mountain now? Felix Pappaladie basically had to retire due to going deaf as a result of playing to loudly. He died in 1983 after being shot by his wife. All though she until this day claims it was an accident. She did serve 16 months for the crime. Felix is rated very highly as a Rock Guitarist and this track does show you what he is capable of.
Korky Laine still plays with Lesile West and as we write are currently on tour.
Mountain are a heavy metal band and are credited for influencing heavy metal but even if you dont like heavy metal music then still give this a listen in the car as you speed off into the future of your life. Im sure you will enjoy it.
